John A. Cabas, age 94, of Salem, passed away on Monday, July 16, 2012. He was born September 13, 1917 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John Login and Elizabeth (Titian) Cabas. Mr. Cabas, a career teacher and coach, was a graduate of New Castle High School, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mount Union College and a Master’s Degree from Westminster College. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Elks Lodge #305. Cabas’s coaching career, which spanned 33 years, began in Salineville in 1940, continuing in Wellsville, Columbiana, Case Tech (Western Reserve), Elyria, culminating in Salem from 1950 – 1973. He retired from the Salem City Schools in 1985 as assistant principal. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane (Orr) Cabas; daughter, Pamela (Cabas) Sigurani of Salem; son, John Mackey Cabas of Salem; brother, Victor N. Cabas (Brigadier General Retired U.S. Air Force) of California; and a nephew, Victor Nicholas Cabas of Virginia. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Reynette Raye Cabas; niece, Laurie Anne Cabas; and two sisters, Annette (Cabas) Montgomery and Elena (Cabas) Stayden of Cincinnati.
