Joel Blonford Whelan, Jr., age 26, resident of Orange and formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at home. Born on August 14, 1985 in Milford, he was the son of Joel B. Sr. and Deborah Anne Kanel Whelan. Joel was a graduate of SCSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He continued his education completing his Masters in Music Education from the University of Bridgeport. Joel was a gifted and accomplished guitarist. He achieved the status of Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed the outdoors. Fitness was a passion of his as he worked out on a daily basis.
In addition to his cherished parents, Deborah and Joel, he is survived by his brother Joshua B. Whelan of Orange, paternal grandmother, Shirley Whelan of Milford and maternal grandparents, Charles and Colleen Kanel of Milford as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Joel was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Robert Whelan, Sr.
