Joe Williams, Jr. was born in Cochran, Georgia on May 27, 1940.  He grew up and was educated in the Palm Beach and Broward County school systems.  He graduated from Blanche Ely High School – Pompano Beach, FL;  Bethune Cookman College – Daytona Beach, FL and North Carolina A & T State University.  Mr. Williams has done additional studies at Edison Community College, Florida A & M University, Florida State University and Florida Atlantic University.

Mr. Williams’ parents were farmers.  His father was a farm overseer.  His mother was a sharecropper.  

Mr. Williams began teaching in 1963 at Lincoln Park Academy Jr. – Sr. High School, in Fort Pierce, Florida.  In 1964, he began teaching in the Lee County School System at Dunbar Jr. – Sr. High School.  There he served as a Biology/Science teacher, baseball coach, assistant football coach and athletic director.  In 1969, he was transferred to Fort Myers Jr. High as a Science Teacher and part-time counselor.  In 1974, he moved to Suncoast Middle as a full-time counselor. In 1992, he transferred to Dunbar Middle until 1997, when he retired.

As a member of this community since 1964, Mr. Williams has been affiliated with many organizations and community projects.  To name a few are Boy Scouts of America (Troup 49), Ft. Myers Jaycees, Bethune-Cookman Alumni and booster associations, Teachers Association of Lee County, Board of Directors for South Gulf and Royal Palm Officials Association, Dunbar Little League Baseball, East Fort Myers Pony League Baseball, North Fort Myers High Band boosters, Florida Association for measurement and evaluation in Guidance, Task Force Committee on implementing School Resource Officers in Lee County Public Schools, Magnet School Committee for Lee County Public Schools, Fort Myers Housing Task Force Committee (Michigan Court Disturbances), Florida Association for non-white concerns, National Junior Honor.

On Thursday August 16, 2012, Joe transitioned from this life to his eternal life. Leaving to cherish his memory: Mother: Revonia Williams of Pompano Beach, FL; Children, Kim Davis (John) of Pompano Beach, FL, Joe Williams, III (Nannette) and Vircel Williams of Fort Myers, FL; Sister: Evalean (Purcell) Blue of Pompano Beach, FL; Sister-in-law, Margaree (John) Douglas of Bowling Green, KY; Grandsons, Justin Williams of Cocoa, FL, LaVoris Byrd of Pompano Beach, FL, Jaron and Joe Williams of Ft. Myers, Florida, LaVoris Byrd IV of Pompano Beach, FL; Aunt: Susie Baggs of Cochran, GA; Godsons, Kendall and Xavier Battle and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
