On June 4, 1954 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Pauline Geneva Nelson of McIntosh. He then returned to Alabama Agricultural Mechanical Institute and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Agriculture. Joe and Pauline were blessed with four children who survive him, Ernie L.
