Larry “Joe” Newman, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather of Meredosia, IL, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Joe was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Meredosia, the son of Samuel J. and M. Courtney Ruyle Newman. He married Barbara May Berry on July 17, 1954, in Wigan, England, and she survives.

He is also survived by his three children, Anthony (wife, Elizabeth) Newman, Randy (wife, Tammy) Newman and Lisa Newman Ladely, all of Meredosia; one sister, Rosemary Stephenson of Mt. Sterling; special nephew, Tom (wife, Lori) Newman of West Peoria; and brother-in-law, Trevor (wife, Sandra) Berry of Wigan, England; five grandchildren, Nicole J. Newman (companion, Robert VanMeter) of Pittsfield, Richard A. (wife, Trish)  Newman, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Jesse Joe Myers (companion, Dereka Johnson) of Meredosia, Ethan D. (wife, Jenni) Myers of Meredosia, and Kristi Newman (husband, Tim) Smith of Jacksonville; eighteen great grandkids and several nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Samuel “JR” and Bruce R. Newman and one sister, Grace, all of Meredosia; his son, Richard A. Newman, Sr.; grandson, Alex Newman; and one son-in-law, Steven B. Ladely.

Joe served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean War. While stationed in England, he met his wife of 67 years, Barb. Upon returning to the States, Joe helped with the construction of the National Starch plant where he worked for 37 years. He also ran a backhoe/septic service on the side for many years. Joe was a big Illini Basketball fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially golfing, scoring a hole-in-one on June 7, 2018, at the age of 86.  Joe especially liked spending time with his grand-kids. He served as commander of American Legion Post #516 for many years, serving as honor guard at many military services.
