Joe J. Vargo, 84, Anderson, passed away February 17, 2011 at Community Hospital, Anderson after a brief illness.

He was born August 31, 1926 in East Chicago, Indiana, and resided in Anderson. Joe was a 1945 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as well as his administrator’s license from Ball State University. He served his country in the US Army from 1944-1946. Mr. Vargo was a teacher and administrator for Anderson Community Schools, retiring after 34 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Retired Teacher’s Association and Monday Morning Breakfast Club. His passion was sports, including coaching football, basketball and wrestling. He is survived by his wife whom he married in 1951, Sara A. Ritter Vargo; daughter, Nancy Vargo; granddaughter, Emma Ford; sister, Julia Jack Hersbach of Crown Point; brother-in-law, Robert Ritter of Fishers; friend, Ray Ward of Colorado; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Rose Iltich Vargo; siblings, Kathrine Vargo, John Vargo, Louis Vargo, Priscilla Schuster and Mary Buergler and special friends, Don Pyle and Pete Russo.
