Joe C. Avery, 89, of Buford, GA passed away Thursday, November 11, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Virginia “Jenny” Bennett Avery; parents, Edward and Minnie walker Avery; and brother, George Avery.
Mr. Avery is survived by his daughter, Sarah Victoria Whidby of Buford, GA; son, David Lamar Whidby of Buford, GA; grandchildren, Kelly (Dan) Stoenica of Dacula, GA, Brian (Debbie) Whidby of Jefferson, GA, and Marshall Whidby of Atlanta, GA; great grandchildren, Tori (Caleb) Jones, Logan Whidby, and Eli Whidby; nephew, Stacey Avery; and niece, JoAnn Rainey. Several great nieces, great nephews, and cousins also survive.
Mr. Avery was born January 9, 1932 in Dahlonega, GA, and was a graduate of North GA College with a Bachelor’s Degree, and a graduate of Peabody College with a Master’s Degree.
He was a veteran of the United States Army for six years. Mr. Avery retired as Superintendent and coach from Buford School System, where he also was a teacher and principal for a number of years. He also taught at Riverside Military Academy, and was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Buford, where he was a Sunday School teacher for over fifty years. He was an avid Georgia football and Braves fan, and was a member of North GA Alumni Association. Mr. Avery also worked for GA Department of Transportation for several years, and also served as Principal in Gwinnett County Public School System.
