DURHAM – Mrs. JoAnne Alford Hill, affectionately known as “Wiggles”, a former resident of Durham, died on Monday, September 11, 2017 at the age of 85. She had been living the last several years at Carolina Beach with her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Hill was born in Johnston County, the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Alford and Hazel Victoria Phillips Alford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hill, and her first husband, Earldean Jackson.
She is survived by her younger brother, Joseph Benjamin “Bennie” Alford, Jr. of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and younger sister, Mildred Hales of Kenly, NC; her daughter, Vicky Hill McCurry and husband, Todd of Carolina Beach, NC; two sons, Dean Jackson and wife, Linda of Creedmoor, NC, and Danny Jackson and wife, Cheryll of Bryant, Arkansas; and her grandchildren, Nicholas, Jessica, Kristina, Ashly, Brittainy, and two fur-grandkitties, Batman and Speedy.
Mrs. Hill worked her younger years as a Nurse in the local doctor’s office in Kenly, and after moving to Durham, she volunteered for many years at the cancer clinic at Durham Regional Hospital and at the Veterans Hospital. She was a faithful member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church in Durham for over 40 years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and participated in multiple committees and activities within the church. Since living at Carolina Beach, she has attended First Baptist Church of Carolina Beach.
She loved all kinds of music, singing and dancing, where she earned her nickname of “Wiggles”, and any kind of social interaction and activity. She was a giving and loving person who had a spunky and sweet personality that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
