Joan Zito Schaefer, 76, of SavinPark, West Haven, passed away suddenly on Aug. 4, 2013 at the St. Raphael’s Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Schaefer. Mrs. Schaefer was born in New HavenJuly 12, 1937, daughter of the late Michael and Rocolena Renda Zito. She was a 1954 graduate of HillhouseHigh School where she was co-captain of the cheerleader squad. She was a dedicated registered nurse, working at the Hospital of St. Raphael for more than 30 years and was the recipient of the Nightingale Award. She enjoyed her annual vacations in Rhode Island with her family. She was a past president of the First Friday Crusade at the former St.
