SIMSICK, Joan Patricia of Kalamazoo. Joan was welcomed into her Father’s Kingdom on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. The mother of four, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of two was an avid reader, and could often be found sitting on her favorite green chair, perusing the works of James Harriett, Ann B. Ross or Jan Karon.
A two-time cancer survivor, Joan lived with her youngest daughter, Sandy Westley, and her family, who run an in-home daycare. Grandma Joan was very popular with the daycare children, and not just because she had a seemingly endless supply of tootsie rolls to hand out. Her family will always remember the annual vacations to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the smell of homemade chicken soup wafting up the stairs and the powerful love Joan showed to each of them individually.
