JOAN McLATCHIE SCHILLING (Age 91)
Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 3, 2017 in Fairfax, VA. Survived by her children Wally (Kathy) Schilling of Melbourne, FL; Suzi (Rick) Smethurst of Williamsburg, VA; Laura (Scott) Gerke of Vienna, as well as 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Walter; sister, Lois; daughter-in-law Corie; and granddaughter, Karisse.
Born September 30, 1925 in Cleveland, graduated with a degree in journalism from University of Wisconsin where she met Walter. They moved to Annandale in 1959 and raised their children. Joan was an active community volunteer and a Fairfax County librarian. Her legacy is her kind and gracious manner and a love of books—creating a family of readers—along with a love of the theater and arts.
