Born July 10, 1918 in Hamlin, Texas to Dr.
Joan married Charles Merritt Swim on August 17, 1940 in Nampa, and in 1941 they moved to Colorado where they were both employed with Joan’s brother Dr.
After moving to Anchorage, Joan was employed by the Alaska Department of Health from 1957-1960. In 1960 she became one of the first school nurses with the Anchorage Borough School District and worked at various elementary schools until 1972. During this time, she did graduate education in Public Health and related courses through the University of Alaska, Alaska Methodist University and the University of Washington.
Upon their retirement in 1972, Joan and Merritt moved back to Nampa. Merritt died in 1975 and Joan remained in Nampa until 1983, working as Health Coordinator for Canyon County Head Start for three years.
In July of 1983, Joan married Dr. Paul Chapman of Sierra Madre, California and moved there until June 1991 when they moved to Nampa. Paul died in December of 2013. At the time of her death, Joan was a resident of Karcher Estates.
Joan’s survivors include her daughters Karen Swim (Ted) Burton of Lewiston, Idaho and Sherry Anne Swim of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Amy, Merritt and Daniel Burton, and Matthew and David Farson, and five great grandchildren. She has one surviving brother, Dr. Paul D. (Laura) Mangum,a sister-in-law Norma Fischer Mangum, and stepmother Frances Mangum. She also leaves behind numerous loving nieces and nephews whom she treasured dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents Dr.
