Joan Louise MacIntosh, 85, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, after an extended illness.

Born Joan Thomas in East Orange, NJ, she developed a love of the beach at an early age by spending summers in Point Pleasant Beach. That love brought her, her husband and their young family to Seaside Park in 1958, where she lived until her passing. Joan was a graduate of Trenton State Teacher’s College (now The College of New Jersey) where she met her future husband, John “Jack” MacIntosh. Joan taught Physical Education/Health for many years starting in Cape May County, then for Central Regional Schools, and finally retiring from Lacey Township Public Schools in 1987.

Family was of primary importance to Joan and she was the center of that family. Her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends remember countless dinners orchestrated by Joan around the big dining room table; full of great food, with laughter and much discussion – and there always being room for one more. Joan’s love extended to her other “family members”, her Newfoundland dogs. Her other interests included cooking, quilting and sewing. She was a lifetime member of the Tri-Boro First Aid, often running off the beach to answer emergency calls. For many years, in all but the harshest weather, Joan was a regular fixture on the Seaside Park boardwalk for early morning walks with friends.

Joan was preceded in death by Jack, her beloved husband of 61 years, by her parents, Harry and Louise Thomas, and by her son-in-law, Charles Hertwig. She is survived by her children and their spouses, John MacIntosh (Jill) of Toms River; Victoria MacIntosh Hertwig of Macon, Georgia; Jeff MacIntosh (Susan) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Jane MacIntosh (Al Rossetti) of Seaside Park., as well as her seven grandchildren: Christopher, Sean and Maureen MacIntosh; Jeremy and Benjamin Radkins; McLean and Collin MacIntosh and seven nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Susanna Zalinyan for her years of dedicated and loving service to Joan and to the entire family.
