Joan L. DeGroot, 83, of Ashland, IL went to meet the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at home.
She was born January 30, 1932 in Ashland, the daughter of Homer and Minnie Alberta Settles Lewis. She married Melvin Dale DeGroot on May 25, 1950 in Ashland and he preceded her in death on December 26, 2012.
She is survived by three sons, Melvin Dennis DeGroot (wife, Kay), Lewis David DeGroot (companion, Ethelyn Bast), and Jerry Darren DeGroot (wife, Victoria), all of Ashland; seven grandchildren, Derek DeGroot (wife, Mindy) of Ashland, Dacia Grimm (husband, Matt) of Auburn, Darci McLaughlin (husband, Doug) of New Windsor, Stormi Moriarity (husband, Tom) of Cambridge, Holli DeGroot (companion, Kevin Dancses) of Nokomis, FL, Sara DeGroot of Ashland, and Drew DeGroot of Ashland; seven great grandchildren; three siblings, Betty Houston of Jacksonville, H.L. Lewis Jr. (wife, Vivian) of Literberry, and Linda Lueck of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Russell Settles.
Joan was a 1950 graduate of Ashland High School and was inducted into the Ashland High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 2013. She was employed many years with the United States Postal Service, retiring as Postmaster of Ashland. She was a member of Richland Creek Baptist Church and the Ashland Women’s Club. Joan was a talented vocalist who performed for many community and church events. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling and playing cards with friends.
