Joan Bowman Hinshaw, 5/24/21 – 2/19/16
Joan Bowman Hinshaw of Scottsdale, Arizona, died peacefully in her sleep on February 19, 2016. She was born in 1921 to Walter and Madge Bowman, where she was raised on her family farm near Westfield, Indiana. Joan graduated from Westfield High School, where she played in the marching Shamrocks band and met her future life partner and husband, Donald Andrew Hinshaw. Married in 1940, they raised their daughters Cindy and Bonnie, and were together until Don’s death in 1991.
Joan served as a secretary in officer’s clubs and worked in the mess halls of US Army Air Force bases during World War II. After the war, Joan was a homemaker, where she lived in Indianapolis, then South Bend on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, and then Carmel, Indiana. In 1967, Joan and her family moved west to Scottsdale, Arizona, where she worked at the Saguaro High School Library until her retirement in 1987.
Joan was preceded in death by many friends and loved ones, particularly her father, Walter Bowman, her mother, Madge Bowman, younger sister Mary Louise Bowman Armstrong, and husband Donald Hinshaw.
