Joan Gwenyth Hall Palmer, born to a British Officer and Irish mother in Dublin, Ireland on February 15th, 1920, lived a life of adventure in far corners of earth before settling back in England at the beginning of WW2. She was the middle child of three and loved to sing even as a young girl. She met the love of her life, Leonard W. Palmer in the midst of World War Two. She was married on in a somewhat infamous quick wedding on June 3, 1943. Joan was one of the 150,000 that left England for a life in America on a “bride ship” with her first born son on her hip.
Her adventurous life continued as she traveled to America, Japan and eventually settling in 1957 in Littleton, Colorado where she spent the remaining years, still living adventures and chronicling them from her early years, first with an old typewritter, then eventually mastering the computer. She wrote hilarious clips about being a mother of 12, and a wife of a very creative man. Her stories will continue to amuse generations to come.
Joan epitomized the attitude of kindness and benevolence. When she wasn’t being a fantastic mother to her 12 children, and a grandmother to 12, and even a great grandmother to 9, she was volunteering, and always looking out for the happiness of others around her.
Joan will be remembered as the woman that EVERYONE loved. She instilled in her children the attitude “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. And she was a fine example. She was a pillar of the Palmer family household that was legendary in Littleton, Colorado (at least in Aberdeen village!)
She will be dearly missed by all of her surviving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but a little bit of Joan will live in all of them through the generations!
Pink Hats off to an incredible woman…..
Mass will be 1:30 pm Friday June 21 at St Francis Cabrini.
