Joan passed away on September 28th at 5:00 pm and was surrounded by her loving family.
Joan was the middle of three children born to Harold R. and Eva E. Horning. She was born on April 15th, 1936 in Cresbard, South Dakota. She moved to Western Oregon with her family in 1938.
Joan grew up in the Hillsboro, Oregon area, first on a horse ranch and later in town. She graduated from Hillsboro High School with numerous honors in 1954. She worked at the local telephone company until her high school sweetheart Gerald M. Simantel returned from a tour of duty with the United States Army.
They later moved to Corvallis, Oregon where Gerald pursued a degree from Oregon State College. During this period, they were blessed with the birth of three children. In 1961 they moved to Brookings, South Dakota where Gerald continued his studies and obtained a PH.D. in 1963.
Upon completion of Gerald’s degree, they moved to Nyssa, Oregon where Gerald went to work for The Amalgamated Sugar Company. After the children reached school age, Joan began employment at the local doctor’s office. Joan became Office Manager for a small doctor’s office and retired after twenty plus years of employment.
Joan is survived by her loving husband and soulmate Gerald (married 60+ years) two children of Boise, Dave Simantel, Debra Barningham (Mike) as well as three grandsons Cory Simantel (Virginia) of Simi Valley, CA, Nate Barningham (Boise, ID) and Trent Barningham (Soap Lake, WA) a sister Murial Ing (Hood River, OR) and brother Gary Horning (Shirley) of Bend, OR.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Eva Horning, a son Dan Simantel and twin grandchildren, Travis and Tracey Barningham.
