Joan Brookings Breedon, 76, of Shalimar, Fla., passed away peacefully on Monday, July 9th. Born in Yonkers, NY to John and Marie Brookings, she graduated from Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY. She went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. At Guilford she met her husband, Joe, of 54 years. They have five children, 12 grandchildren and have lived in Shalimar since 1971.
Joan taught first grade for one year and then began her family. After the children were grown she was employed by the American Red Cross to assist victims of floods, hurricanes and natural disasters. Her work took her to many parts of the US.
Joan enjoyed gardening and playing tennis. She played with the same tennis friends at the FWB Racquet Club and Shalimar Pointe for many years.
Joan leaves her husband, Joe, and two sons, Joseph Jr. and wife, Pat, of Alpharetta, GA, and Robert of Tulsa OK, and three daughters, Joanne Breedon, of Tulsa, OK, Kathy Robinson and husband, Gordon, of Tulsa, OK, and Tyree Cunningham and husband, Lee, of Middleburg, FL. and 12 grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Eleanor Schemenauer and husband, Ken, of Cambridge, WI, and one brother, John Brookings and wife, Cathy, of Wilmington, DEL.
