Jessie Servon Smith was born in Lawrence County, AL on March 31, 1960. He was the seventh of eight children born to Jeff Ella Smith and Thomas Fuqua Jr. He departed this life Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at his home in Decatur, AL.
Jessie confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined Westside Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, AL, under the leadership of Reverend George Smith. Shortly after graduating from Austin High School in Decatur, AL, the class of 1978, he sought employment with General Electric. He rendered 31 years of distinguished service to General Electric remaining a faithful employee until 2014 when his health declined. He had a special love for basketball and Auburn football. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Seymore Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Sebrina Swopes-Smith; a daughter, Angel Baker; stepsons, Brandon Swopes (Kendra), Miami, FL, Randall Swopes and Justin Swopes , Decatur; stepdaughter, Shabria Swopes of Decatur; brothers, George Shoulders, Bruce Smith of Decatur, Gene Pearson, the Rev. Lawrence Fuqua Sr. (Doris), Cleoney Fuqua (Nancy), Joe Fuqua, Samuel Fuqua, Lynnwood Fuqua (Vickie) all of Town Creek, AL; sisters, Pearl Watkins (James) and Blanche Gray of Decatur, Hattie Kennedy and Laxie Clark of Town Creek, AL; mother-in-law, Dorothy Swopes, Decatur; brothers-in-law, George Swopes Jr., Lawrence Swopes, Jeffery Swopes (Sharon), Toney Swopes and Darrick Swopes (Rekita) all of Decatur, Buster Swoopes (Willie), Lawton, OK, and Gregory Swopes (Inga), Baltimore, MD; sisters-in-law, Lendia Swopes, Mattie Burks (Robert), Joyce Oliver, Regina Swopes, Sharon White and LaTanya Swopes, all of Decatur, Jacklen Robinson (Leonard), Brentwood, TN and Celia Cotton, Severn, MD; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives.
