Jenny Hertha Onkka passed away peacefully at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland on December 7, 2021, age 71. A 20 year resident of Alameda, Jenny was born in Oakland, California on April 21, 1950 and remained in the Bay Area all her life attending McKinley Elementary and San Leandro High School.
Likeable, fun, smart, and skilled, she had a successful working career with organizations such as Kaiser Aluminum and the FBI. For the last 35 years, she worked for Mary Cranston, supporting Mary through her years at Pillsbury Law in San Francisco, and in her later career as a director on various boards. Jenny had the happy combination of high IQ and EQ. Her grasp of complex situations and organization skills were extraordinary, but her people skills were even better. Jenny was very interested in her fellow human beings, and delighted in getting to know things about their interests and lives. In her work, Jenny touched hundreds of executives, attorneys, and board administrators, and was beloved by all. At her passing, notes poured in talking about her effectiveness, intelligence, kindness and sense of humor—and how much she will be missed.
Jenny was also an honorary “aunt” to Mary’s children, Susie and John, and her grandchildren, Jackson, James, Grant and Tyler. She helped all of them with the details of their lives, and they loved her dearly.
Her parents Glenn and Alice Onkka preceded Jenny in death. She lived a full life and had many interests including art, music, and reading. A pet lover since childhood, she made many friends on her neighborhood walks with a host of dogs and their owners. She cared for many cats during her lifetime including her beloved Harley and Wheeler and her dear Jinksy and Jango. Her smile, engaging personality, and melodic voice will always be remembered by those who knew her well.
