JEANNE DODD ELLIOTT
June 19, 1917 – October 21, 2012
Jeanne Dodd Elliott, 95, of Dallas. Texas passed away peacefully on October 21, 2012 at 9:30 AM at Senior Care Lake Pointe in Rockwall, Texas. Jeanne was born June 19, 1917 to David and Annie Stewart (McCorkle) Dodd in Mena, Arkansas. During her early school-aged years, Jeanne received extensive training in music and ballet and moved to California after high school with her sister Ann to study and dance professionally. She later moved to Corpus Christi, Texas with her sister Betty. There she met David (Dave) G. Elliott while playing badminton at the recreation center and they married on January 23, 1942. They were married for 51 years until his death in 1993. During WWII while Dave was serving overseas as Corporal in the Army Air Force, Jeanne moved back to Mena, Arkansas to open a private dance studio with her mother providing live piano accompaniment.
Jeanne and Dave moved to Dallas, Texas in 1950, to raise their four daughters, Ann, Nancy, Ellen, and Martha, instilling in them their mutual love for both the performing arts and nature. The family spent many years together creating Jeanne’s annual dance recitals. As a lifetime teacher of classical ballet in the Cechetti method, including nearly 30 years at the Town North YMCA, Jeanne provided ongoing instruction of dance well into her mid 80’s. Many students of all ages will remember her longtime loyalty in providing them with opportunities to pursue their dreams, whether it was to learn grace and coordination, to stay fit and healthy, or to develop artistry for a dance career.
Jeanne always loved to be in the outdoors with family and friends, to garden, hike, camp, play tennis, or ride her bicycle to the YMCA to swim and teach.
Jeanne is survived by her daughters: Ann Munn; Nancy and husband Nate Holt; Ellen and husband Skip Solomon; Martha and husband Terry Palmer. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters Betty Connell and Ann Irwin.
