Peacefully departed this life on April 24, 2013, at home in the presence of loving children and friends. Born June 14, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA., to the late Bessie Owens and John Church, Jeanette became a Registered Nurse specializing in obstetrics. She trained at Boston City Hospital, Bayonne NJ School of Nursing, and Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, Jersey City NJ. In 1956, Jeanette joined the nursing staff at Patterson Army Hospital, Fort Monmouth, NJ. In 1951, Jeanette married Robert Turner, II of Neptune, NJ and had seven children. They divorced in 1964 and Jeanette, with her beloved mother’s support, raised the family while rising to supervisory and administrative level nursing positions. A woman of faith, Jeanette was a lector and active member of Our Lady of All Souls Parish, East Orange, NJ.
Passionate about education, Jeanette obtained a BA in sociology from Seton Hall University in 1975 and was also awarded the Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Retired from nursing in 1980, Jeanette remained active through work with the US Veterans Administration, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the IRS. In 2000, Jeanette moved to Silver Spring, MD near some of her children and provided administrative support to the White House Office of Recycling, Washington, DC under the National Senior Citizen Education and Research Center Program. In 2010, Jeanette relocated to Atlanta, GA with one of her daughters and was dubbed the “Ambassador” by friends because of her outreach and gracious manner to all. Jeanette is survived by her seven children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
