Jeanette E. Smith, 99, of Johnston died on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Bishop Drumm Care Center. Jeanette was born in Dubuque on March 15, 1922 to Paul and Carolyn (Birner) Billmeyer. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Mercy School of Nursing in 1943. She was a Registered Nurse and Instructor for over 70 years, retiring in 2016. She met the love of her life, George A. Smith, in Dubuque. They were married in 1946 and moved to Des Moines from Marshall town in 1966. They built a life together until his passing in 1981.
Jeanette was a long-time member of St. Mary of Nazareth Church. In addition to her passion for nursing, she enjoyed shopping for bargains, watching Iowa State sports, playing games and keeping current with politics. She loved spending time with her family and will be remembered for her strong belief in family traditions.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Becky), Doug (Lin), Christine (Robert) Stanton and Cindy Cross; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; infant son, Thomas; grandchild, Timothy Smith and four siblings.
