Troy – Jean W. Carey, 95, of 2218 Burdett Avenue died Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Eddy Village Green at Cohoes after a brief illness.
Born in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of the late Harry Morehouse Startup and Harriet Kilroe Startup and wife of the late Booth Carey. She was raised in Albany and resided in Troy since the early 1940’s and was a graduate of Albany High School and Mildred Elley School.
Mrs. Carey was a volunteer for 50 years at Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary in the Corner Shop. She was also a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Altar Guild, and volunteered in the Thrift Shop. She was a consummate knitter, knitting countless hats for newborns at Samaritan Hospital.
Survivors include her children, Diane (Patrick) Simmons, Englewood, FL, Susan (Walter) Nowik, Clifton Park, and Peter B. (Wendy) Carey, West Sand Lake; a grandson, Lt. Col. Todd (Erika) Simmons, USMC, Dumfries, VA; two great grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Simmons. She was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Barth and Ruth Carroll.
