Jean Marlow, of Lone Rock, passed away on Friday July 27, 2012 at her home surrounded by her children. Jeanie Given Buchanan, the daughter of James and Isabella (Given) Buchanan, was born on June 5, 1925 in Glasgow, Scotland. On October 5, 1945 Jean was united in marriage with William Marlow in Glasgow, Scotland. Jean then left her homeland for America, not knowing what to expect and not having any idea what moving to a small town in northern Iowa would really be like. Jean had a zest for life that was that was unmatched by most. Her love of her family, thankfulness for what she had been blessed with, and the many friends she had made during her lifetime were always the priorities in her life. Whether it be a family event or social get together, you knew that there would be joy and laughter as well as storytelling and singing accompanying her. She held on to these personal attributes up to the very end. Jean had worked at the Berkley plant in Emmetsburg, she then owned and operated Jean’s Café in Lone Rock, and later worked at the West Side Apartments for Exceptional Opportunities in Algona and then Kum N Go in Algona. Jean was a member of the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church, Ladies Aide, Kerr-Hammerstrom American Legion Post #557 Auxiliary and Card Club. She enjoyed Bingo, Euchre, Casinos, horse racing, knitting, bowling, dancing and singing. Left to cherish Jean’s memory are three sons, Allan Marlow and his wife Vicki of Oceanside, CA, Ken Marlow of Algona and Rick Marlow and his wife Lori of Lone Rock; two daughters, Laurie Newbrough and her husband Steve of Kelley and Connie Schmidt of Grimes; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; a brother, John Buchanan of Corby, England; and a sister, Betty Smith of Glasgow, Scotland. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William (Bill) in 2010; three brothers, James, Archie and Alec Buchanan; and a sister, Isabella Buchanan.
