Jean K. Rhodes, 83, of Salem, died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Salem Community Hospital. She was born June 5, 1930 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Phil and Margaret (Cappy) Stratford. Jean was a 1948 graduate of Ursuline High School in Youngstown. She was a member of the Saint Paul Catholic Church, volunteer choir of the church and a member and past state and national president of C.D. of A. She was also a member of L. C. B. A., Catholic Council of Ohio Churches, Buckeye Dairy Boosters, Columbiana County Extension Homemakers, Beta Theta Sorority, Winona Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and she was the first recipient of the Golden Eagles Award at United High School. She was Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Youngstown Diocese Council of Catholic Woman. Received “Papal Honors” from the Diocese of Youngstown. Survivors include her husband, James A. Rhodes Jr. whom she married June 16, 1951; her children, Diane M. (Robert) Hughes of Little Rock, Arkansas, James A. (Karen) Rhodes III of Salem, Norma Jean (John) Koch of Cleveland, John P. (Gayle) Rhodes of Salem, Ellen M. (Glenn) Turkelson of Lebanon, Thomas G. Rhodes of Salineville and Earl R. Rhodes of North Canton; three sisters, Blanche Lanterman of Leetonia, Phyllis McCarthy and Katie Flicky both of Knoxville, Tennessee; two brothers, Earl (Mary) Stratford of Mason and Norman (Kathleen) Stratford of Findley; 17 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers, George and Phil Stratford and a sister, Peggy Cappelli preceded Jean in death.
