Jean Williams Fortney

Jean W. Fortney, 94, of Arthurdale, WV, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

She was born May 5, 1922, in Strattanville, PA, the daughter of the late Edwin G. and Mabel S. Williams. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles “Barney” Fortney.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Jean taught Social Studies and English for 36 years at Brookville High (PA), Tunnelton High, and Central Preston Middle schools. She was a member of the Tunnelton United Methodist Church, where she played both piano and organ and especially enjoyed playing for the choir. She has served as treasurer of the Tunnelton Colonel Rowan Post 2345 Ladies’ Auxiliary and had been a member of Tunnelton Homemakers Club. She also attended many Rotary and VFW functions with her husband, Charles. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed “curling up with a good book or magazine” at times when family was gone. In her later years, she relied on CNN to keep up with the news, and she was very interested in the 2016 Presidential race.

She is survived by her son Ed and wife Joyce of Arthurdale, with whom she made her home for the past five years; four grandchildren — Kelley Williams and husband Paul of Columbus, OH, Cynthia Moffitt and husband Mike of Santa Clarita, CA, Bonna Keckley and husband Chris of Bluffton, SC, and Craig Fortney and wife Elizabeth of Elkins, WV; and 14 great-grandchildren.
