Jean Elizabeth Leuthauser, 94, of Lake Mills, IA formerly of Spirit Lake passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, IA. Jean was born on June 5, 1922, in Sheldon, IA to Rudolph and Marguerite (Kemper) Yappen.
She graduated from Sibley High School and attended Iowa State University majoring in Home Economics. She was united in marriage to Robert Nelson. To that union, three children were born. She was later united in marriage to Alvin Leuthauser on June 27, 1997, in Omaha.
He preceded her in death in 2002. Jean was a homemaker for the majority of their life dedicating her time to rising her three children. When her children were grown and gone, she continued her mothering skills as a House Mom at the University of Santa Barbara and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She was a member of the PEO in Spirit Lake and was very active in the Methodist Church in Sibley. Jean enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, baking, and being outdoors. In her free time, she looked forward to spending time at West Okoboji.
Jean is survived by her daughter Deborah (Lindsay)Eckerman of Forest City, IA; son Dr. William (Diane) Nelson of Denver, CO; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her son Dr. Stephen Nelson.
