Jean E. Winch (nee Edgerton) relocated to heaven on December 5, 2018 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of 40 years to the late George Holden Winch, whom she married on August 30, 1952. Loving mother of Anne Edgerton Winch of Cranston, RI, Dawson Elizabeth Winch of Hockessin, DE and Leah Winch Ortega (John) of Yuma, AZ. Devoted grandmother of Rachel, Stephanie and Timothy Ortega.
Born in Goldsboro, NC, Jean was the daughter of the late Grace Slaughter Edgerton and Cedric Errol Edgerton and dear sister of the late John Slaughter Edgerton and Ann Edgerton Dunstan.
Jean attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina (now University of North Carolina-Greensboro) for two years, then graduated from Longwood University, Farmville, VA where she was a member of Kappa Delta, Alpha Chapter. She continued her education, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbia University.
Jean taught kindergarten, first grade and second grade in Portland, Oregon; Easthampton, Long Island, NY and in Haddonfield, NJ at the Central and Elizabeth Haddon schools where she retired in 1987 and received the NJ State Teacher of the Year award during her tenure.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights for over 60 years and a member of the Colonial Dames of America. Jean enjoyed traveling, visiting 6 of 7 continents–North America, Europe, Australia, South America, Asia and Antartica. She was also very active as a volunteer at Your Food Shelf in Camden, NJ for over 30 years.
