Jean “Hoffman” Carmichael, the daughter of Alfred and Louise (Krause) was born February 25, 1926, in Ida Grove, Iowa. She attended a country school near Ida Grove and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1942, at the age of 16. Jean went on to attend Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls for two years and then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where she received her four-year degree. On June 22, 1947, Jean married Reuel Carmichael at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Jean taught in the Laurens and Mallard schools for thirty-plus years and she and Ruel lived on the Carmichael farm near Mallard their entire married lives. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mallard and the Curlew and neighborhood coffee group. Jean taught Sunday school and loved the outdoors, nature, and farm life. Friends were very important to Jean and she had a special place in her heart for those who served their country.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Gwen Carmichael. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reuel; brother, Robert, and brother-in-law, Ron Carmichael.
