Jean (Ahlness) Stebinger, 93, passed away surrounded by her family on December 10, 2015. She is now reunited with her husband, Arnold, who predeceased her in 2003. Born in tiny Rhame, North Dakota on July 2, 1922, Jean was one of three children of the late Hans and Frieda (Lien) Ahlness. After graduating from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, she was selected by the State Department as one of twenty-five women sent worldwide to help with the war effort, ending up in Cairo, Egypt. There she met and married Arnold Stebinger in 1945. Together they lived in Egypt; Lebanon; London, England; Bronxville, NY; Jakarta, Indonesia; Columbia, SC; and Cromwell, CT. They shared 58 years, raising a family of four. Once the children were grown, Jean started her own business, Nationwide Medical Recruiters, which she sold in 1997. She was an avid writer, self-publishing several books of memoirs and poetry, and an enthusiastic outdoor person who took on mountain ranges all over the world.
