Daughter of Everal D. and Virginia (Jeffrey) Epperson was born March 20, 1922 in Chillicothe, MO. Her family moved to Ventura County, California, where she spent the first five years of her schooling. Upon their return to Missouri, she graduated from Fulton High School. She received a B.S. in Business Education from the Kirksville Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now known as the Northeast Missouri State University) where she also was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma sorority. She taught commercial subjects in high school for one year after college, but decided that would not be her career. She moved to Dallas and began employment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb. 1, 1947, at that time called Southwestern Medical Center, housed in barracks, and 2 years before it became a part of the University of Texas. She retired after 37 years in the same Department, and during the tenure of all the Deans/Presidents with the exception of Dr. Slaughter, the very first Dean, and the current President, and all the Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the exception of the current Chairman. She learned a lot during that time since her duties began not only as secretary, but also “nurse” when seeing private patients with the staff. When two Parkland Ob-Gyn residents studied under Dr. Papanicolau and Dr. Ayres learning the technics for taking, staining, and interpreting cervical smears for cancer, when needed, she also learned to take smears in the Hospital Clinic and Family Planning and stain the slides not only for the Ob-Gyn Faculty but also for private practice Ob-Gyn doctors. The Department honored her in many ways. The most memorable was on her 25th anniversary with the School. At the Southwestern Gynecological Assembly in Dallas she was presented with a check for $5000, a gift from the then current Interns, Residents, Fellows, and Staff. Under her picture in the Ob-Gyn Department the Legend says “The Department grew to over 400 employees and upon retirement she had to train six people to assume her duties without the benefit of a training manual since much of her knowledge was derived from years of experience.” Upon retirement she and her husband moved to Granbury, TX where her husband was designer and contractor for the house they built on what they considered the most desirable place on the Lake (across from the Court House, the Beach, the main street of town, and where all the Granbury lake and 4th of July activities took place.) The reflections of light across the Lake at night were beautiful, especially at Christmas.
