Jan Moncrief died peacefully on Sunday, May 1st, with her family at her bedside. She was born on October 21, 1952, in Clovis, NM to Peggy and Harold Brooks. Her father was a roadmaster for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. She grew up in Belen and Albuquerque and attended Manzano High School. After starting her family, she studied nursing at San Jacinto College and worked as a registered nurse for more than 35 years. She worked at the University of New Mexico Medical Center until 1986. She travelled internationally as a flight attendant for TWA, based in New York, for two years. Most of her career, since 1991, was spent at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas and when that closed, Clements University Hospital up to the present time.
Jan is survived by her husband Christian Moncrief; son Aaron Romero; daughter Jenna Henkes; son-in-law Judd Henkes IV; granddaughters Halo Romero and Lilly Henkes; grandson Judd Henkes V’ sister Laurie Rogers; brother-in-law Johnny Rogers; nephews Joseph and Daniel Rogers; niece Amanda Weir; and aunt Myrna McPhetrige.
Jan’s abiding interests included gardening, painting, music, interior design, cooking and her beloved New Mexico. She had a quirky fascination with forensic science. Many knew her as a gentle, but vibrant, outgoing, sympathetic and loyal friend. She had an affinity for all animals, especially her own lucky pets, and was committed to the humane treatment of all creatures.
