January 22, 1950 – January 3, 2015
Janine Lee Gossett, affectionately known as Nini, passed away January 3, 2015 in Boerne, Texas, after a lengthy illness. She was 64 years old. Janine was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on January 22, 1950 where she resided most of her life. Her respiratory illness did not stop her from enjoying life. While attending Carlsbad high school, she sang with the Troubadour Choir and was in the All State Choir three years. She was also a member of the National Honor Society. Janine furthered her education at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University where she received her Bachelor’s in Education and Language Arts. Several years later she received her Master’s in Education. Janine taught junior high students English and Language Arts in multiple schools in Carlsbad for 25 years. She was honored as “Who’s Who” of National Educators. Janine’s personality made school fun for all students and her sense of adventure allowed many students to travel with her to world wide destinations, such as Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Needless to say, her students loved her. Nini loved to sing! Participating in plays and musicals at Carlsbad Little Theater, she received numerous awards and accolades from the community theater. Janine sang for several years in the choir at First Presbyterian Church. She later directed the handbell choir. Janine’s love of family was obvious! Nini was cherished by her nieces and nephews. Fun (and some mischievousness) was the order of the day, sometimes much to the chagrin of their parents. Having slumber parties, watching scary movies and playing all kinds of games was her way to spend as much time with them as possible. Throughout her entire life, Janine taught, sang, loved and volunteered in her community, all the while enduring advanced respiratory disease along with the ravages of Rheumatoid arthritis. She bravely laughed and sang through it all. As her disabilities increased in severity, she retired from teaching after 25 years. With the passing of her father, Adair Gossett, Janine and her Mother, Anita, made the decision to leave Carlsbad and move to Boerne, Texas, in order to be closer to her sister and brother-in-law, Dana and Rodney Reese. Because of the proximity to San Antonio and its advanced medical community, Boerne proved to be a good choice for specialized medical care. But, in her heart, Carlsbad, New Mexico remained her forever home. Thanksgiving and Christmas 2014 were days filled with love and laughter, as two of Janine’s nieces, Megan Vickers and Melissa Anderton, along with their young children, came to celebrate. As the year 2015 arrived, Nini was comforted and cared for by her family when the Lord called her home. Nini would be the first to say “thank you, Mom” for Anita was always there. Janine Lee Gossett is survived by her mother, Anita Hilty Gossett, formerly from Carlsbad, and now residing in Boerne, Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, Adair Gossett and her grandparents, Everett and Clara Hilty and Edna Gossett. Janine is survived by her four sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce Adaire and Fred Wehmeyer of Lubbock, Texas, Dianne and Tom Mathis of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Lauren and Francis Lewis of Arlington, Texas and Dana and Rodney Reese of Boerne, Texas. She is also survived by her nieces, Kim Mathis Cavender, Megan Reese Vickers, Melissa Reese Anderton, and nephews, Scott Wehmeyer and Brian Routon, along with many grandnieces and nephews.
