Janice Marie Weatherly Sublett passed away on January 6, 2022, in Denver, Colorado. She was
ninety years old.
from moderate to severe dementia.
Janice was born on November 19, 1931, at the home of Roy Weatherly and Katie Lucile Irvan
Weatherly, in Murray, Kentucky. She was their first child. Later the family would expand with four more
girls and three boys. A favorite family story states that the first three births, which happened in the
Weatherly home, were girls – but the first time Lucile went to a hospital to give birth, she had a boy.
Janice attended Murray Public Schools and graduated from Murray High School in 1949. In high
school she was a cheerleader and also voted best looking in her class. She was married to Malcolm
Heavrin Sublett (1926-1989) on the second day of February, 1950, in Murray / Calloway County,
Kentucky. Malcolm was a WWII veteran and still in the Army.
Not long after the birth of their first child – Malcolm Sublett III (1951-1968), the family was sadly
involved in a horrible automobile accident, in which the baby’s skull and brain were damaged, and Janice
was thrown through the front window. She was injured so badly that two of the doctors that examined her
stated that they did not think she would survive. But she did. Baby Malcolm III survived as well, but his
brain was irreparably damaged.
Between the early 1950s and 1965, Janice and family lived in Casper, Wyoming, and Colorado.
Janice began teaching in Wyoming during this time. She never was enlisted in the Military, but believed

Almost exactly two years later, in 1959, she gave birth to twin boys (fraternal) – Barry Reagan and Roger
Ashley (1959-2021).
While living in Broomfield, Colorado, Janice became involved with local organizations that
specialized in the care of special needs children. She worked closely with Laradon Hall, where Malcolm
III was enrolled. She also met and consulted with the people who helped create the prestigious Bal Swan
school. Although she was not appointed as an official founder, she was recognized as a significant

1967 she gave birth to her fifth child, Thomas Jason Sublett. After moving into a home formerly owned

Janice also joined the Twins Club of Denver.
Shortly after 1970 Janice enrolled in Metropolitan State College, soon after it opened. She pursued
a Bachelors in English, and graduated in 1976. She worked closely with the head of the department at the
time, Dr. Barbara Blansett, and over time they became good friends.
Janice began work as a substitute teacher in the Denver Public Schools soon after she graduated
from MSC. She worked in this position for at least thirty years. Her preference was the Middle and High
school grades. Also, she preferred to stay close to English, Writing, Literature and Special Needs classes.
During her career with DPS, she was employed as a personal assistant to teachers in the English
departments of Thomas Jefferson and West high schools.

She continued to be a member of the Ladies Sunday School class of UHBC for forty years.
For a brief period of time, Janice was also a member of the National Organization for Women. She
attended the International Women’s Year conference in Salt Lake City in 1977, bringing her whole family,
including her mother. She remained a Democrat her entire life, often citing her approval of FDR, the

Habitat for Humanity foundation.
Janice’s hobbies were reading and classic movies. She also enjoyed many styles of music,
including Christian/Gospel and Jazz/Big Bands, but not the dreaded “repetitive hard rock!” She did have
several pets during her life, and favored cats.
She is survived by her sister Nettie (Weatherly) Jones, of Dexter, KY, brother John (Bobbie)
Weatherly of Murray, KY, and brother Harry Weatherly, of Union City, TN, her daughter Shannon Sublett
of Dallas, TX, son Barry R. (Sherry Sellers) Sublett of Aurora, CO, son Thomas J Sublett, also of Dallas, TX, and two grandchildren, Jackson Skylar and Logan Montgomery Sublett, both residing near Parker, CO.
