Janet Irene (McKenna) Matson, 93, of Covenant Village in Cromwell, wife of the late Rev. Sargis Matson, passed away on Thursday, November 11th at Middlesex Hospital. Born in New Rochelle, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clifton and Anna (Moore) McKenna. In 1938, Janet graduated with a BA from Bucknell University. There she was the President of her sorority, and the 1st woman president of the Christian Association. In 1940 she received her MA in Christian Education from Hartford Seminary. There she met Sargis Matson, her beloved husband of nearly 52 years. Janet used her training well, as a pastor’s wife, and was active with him in Christian Camping in CT, and the development of American Baptist camps in both MA and NY. She held a variety of offices in American Baptist circles, including Secretary of the State Board of Directors in CT and later Moderator in MA. She was active in women’s work with far-reaching global impact, as well as president of various groups, and public speaking in many capacities. Janet lived in Cromwell since 1994 moving from Westfield, MA.
