James William “Jim” Yates died surrounded by family on July 29, 2016, in Indianapolis, IN at the age of 30.
Jim is survived by many people who hold him dear, including his parents William and Deborah (Schmidt) Yates as well as his older sister Rachael (Yates) Pileggi and husband Benjamin along with his older sister Kristen Yates. He is preceded in death by grandparents Raymond Yates and Rev. Dr. Martin and Gladys Schmidt, and by his Aunt Beverly Schmidt.
Jim was born on July 3, 1986, in Milwaukee, WI. His childhood was active and playful and he loved to spend time exploring and hiking outdoors. By age 13, he earned elite membership in the Adirondack 46er Club for hiking the 46 high peaks in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. Jim enjoyed building meaningful friendships with neighborhood children and fellow students at school. He graduated from Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana in 2005, and cum laude from Hanover College in 2009, with a BA in Philosophy and a Business Scholars distinction. While in college, Jim traveled overseas to study in Belgium.
Jim was known for his imagination and wit.
Jim was a loyal, generous and patient individual who looked out for others in every situation. In his last few years, he demonstrated bravery, grit and grace in the face of suffering as he battled frequent hospitalizations and complications caused by multiple autoimmune diseases, which ultimately ended his life.
