James was born on Christmas Day in Republic, Alabama. His parents were James Franklin Mann of Cedartown, Georgia and Johnnie Flora Queen of Republic, Alabama. Frank passed away in August of 1930. James and his sisters, Elsie Marie “Midge” Mann Hayes (T. W. Hayes, Sr.) and Frankie Elizabeth “Peggy” Mann Cross
(Alva Wade Cross), were raised by their mother and grandmother, Melvina Elizabeth Jones Queen in the Acipco community in Birmingham, Al.
James attended Phillips High School in Birmingham, Al. After graduation in 1948, James married Mary Vivian Sanford.
James joined the U S Army and was in the 11th Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY before being stationed with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC with the Military Police.
James was active in the Bendale Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter Effie Moore in Birmingham. He was a member of the Zamora Shrine Temple and associated with the Legion of Honor and the Go Kart Unit. James was also a member of the American Legion John Prince Post #15 in Glendo.
James is survived by his daughter, Connie Inman; his granddaughter Rachel (Wesley) Thomas; great grandchildren Tela and Landon Thomas all of Glendo; nieces Eleanor Hayes Hollis, Kate Smith and Karen (Roger) Jones of Alabama and their families; and nephews Thomas Hayes, Jr., Keith (Deb) Sapp, Steve Cross (Vanessa), Allan (Kim) Cross, Jim Cross and Ron Cross and their families.
