James Vincent Egan, known as “Jim,” passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in his beloved Sherman Hill neighborhood on Friday, August 6, 2021.

In many ways, Jim was a “farmer” like his grandfathers before him. He was a “tiller of the soil” and loved the land. He enjoyed working at farmers markets in Des Moines and Eureka Springs, Arkansas for over 25 years, sharing his knowledge and recipes with his many customers. His specialties included orchids, mushrooms, wildflowers, marijuana, and raspberries.

He was also an extraordinary culinary trained chef and bartender in local Des Moines restaurants for many years. As a laryngectomy survivor, he counselled many others in Iowa Methodist Hospital on how to talk again successfully and live fully.

Jim enjoyed fishing, reading, watching the news, and eating! He appreciated food immensely and was “at home” in the kitchen.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, George and Ruby (Corl Egan), and his brother Frank Egan.

He is survived by his son, Shelby Patrick Egan Field, daughter-in-law, Latasha, and grandson, Kai, of Texas. He is also survived by his grandson, Trevor Field of Arkansas; three brothers: Dave Egan of Colorado, Mike Egan of Wyoming, and Greg Egan of Wyoming; and sister, Beth Egan of California; along with four nephews and two nieces.

He had a profusion of eclectic friends and associates in Des Moines and Eureka Springs, Arkansas, who will miss him dearly.

The family wishes to thank Bob, Bruce, Doc, Carrie and Phil for their loyalty, friendship and loving care of Jim over the years.
