James T Kirwan, formerly of Spring Hill Avenue, Norwalk, died of cancer at the age of 87 at the Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Florida, Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Jim was the last of 4 sons of the late Helen Monahan Kirwan and Aloysius Kirwan and survived by several nieces, nephews and many friends who loved him dearly.
Jim graduated from Norwalk High school and at 16 immediately entered the Navy to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. After he was discharged he went to college and then radio school to pursue his passion for broadcasting. His first radio job was at Norwalk’s WNLK 1350 as the afternoon DJ. After leaving Norwalk, his career took him to various states as announcer, manager and owner of various radio stations around the country, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
In Puerto Rico he was the owner of Schellenberg and Kirwan, the largest advertising rep firm in the Islands. Jim was the voice of the Caribbean on many tourism promotions and made several commercials for major advertisers with Sally Jessie Raphael in San Juan.
Upon his retirement, Jim returned to the United States and settled in Boca Raton, Florida and later moved to Delray Beach.
