James Herman Steinbach was born April 1, 1935 to George Herman and Katherine Mary (Carr) Steinbach in Chariton, Iowa. He passed from this life, December 5, 2013 at the Legacy Lodge Hospice located in Chariton at 78 years of age.

He attended Alma Clay School in Chariton where he began many long-lasting friendships. He graduated with the High School Class of 1953, participating in 4 years varsity football. While in the 10th grade English class, classmate Barb Shrader was informed by the teacher, that Jim’s explanation for one of his missing assignments, was her distracting beauty. After their graduation ceremony, upon exiting the school, Jim presented his intention and engagement ring to Barb.

He began working at the family business, Steinbach Meat Co. in Chariton, at a very young age. It closed in 1986, and he worked for Pella Corp 10 years, retiring in 1999.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Steinbach and Katherine Mary (Carr) Steinbach; his son, James Patrick Steinbach; his brother, Lawrence Steinbach, and his sister, Rosemary Evans.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Shrader) Steinbach of Chariton, IA; his daughter, Lisa Offenburger of

Chariton, IA; his son, Shawn (Lisa) Steinbach of Galesburg, IL; his grandchildren, Whitley Offenburger, Erin Steinbach, Madison Offenburger, and Matthew Steinbach; great- granddaughter Payton Offenburger; his sister, Cecilia (Steinbach) Farrell of Yorkville, IL; his brother, Leo (Kay) Steinbach of Chariton, IA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
