James S. Sam Murphy, 88, of Vincennes passed away Saturday, October 1, 2016, at the Timbers in Jasper, IN. He was born October 28, 1927, in Vincennes the son of Ulysses and Wilhelmina Utterbach Murphy.
He was a graduate of Lincoln High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He received a degree from Vincennes University and he married Doris Taylor and they made their life together until her death on October 28, 2002. He was active in funeral service with the Gardner Funeral Home, Brockman Funeral Home and for the last 15 years with the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home. He formerly was the general manager of the Executive Inn in Paducah, KY, and Evansville, IN. He was active in Vincennes Civitan from the start of the club and formerly served as Midwest District Governor. He held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and was a kind gentleman.
He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Berry, and her husband Mark of Vincennes, and his grandchildren, Jamie Loftin, Jon Mays, Jordon Mays, Barry Mac Morrison, Shannon Marlin, Paula McBride, and Jaxon Berry. He was also blessed by 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Nellie McClure of Vincennes and Nancy Sanderfer of Charleston, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Murphy, a daughter, Vinnie Morrison Peek, and 3 Brothers, Francis Hank Murphy, Paul Murphy, and Robert Murphy in infancy. 2 Sisters also preceded, Irene Owen and Mary Root.
