Mr. James Powell Hollis died on March 13, 2012 at his residence at Wesley Woods in Newnan. He was a native of Coweta County and was born January 8, 1926; one of three children born to the late Joseph Gray Hollis, Sr. and Isaac Powell Hollis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Sara Gray Parrott Cole and Joseph Gray Hollis, Jr. A graduate of Newnan High School in 1942, he attended Emory University and was a member of Kappa Alpha. He graduated from Cornell University’s Midshipman School and served during World War II in the Pacific as a gunnery and communications officer in the U. S. Navy’s amphibious forces aboard the USS LSM 490. Following the war, he continued his education and graduated from The University of Georgia. He returned to Newnan and joined his father and brother in the family business, The Johnson Hardware Company which became an iconic symbol of the rich history of Newnan’s downtown. Deeply committed to the civic life of Newnan, he served as president of The Newnan Country Club and was extensively involved in the Newnan Retail Merchants Association. He served, also, on the Board of Directors of The Newnan Hospital and The Citizens and Southern Bank. Upon his retirement from Johnson Hardware, he and his wife made their home in Daytona Beach for 16 years before returning to Newnan. Surviving is his wife, Joyce Lavender Hollis and her children Jerry Dixon, Jr. and his wife Kristen; Ginger Mongato and her husband Vincent. They have also enjoyed the blessings of a grandson, Owen Dixon. Other survivors include his nephews E. Carlton Parrott, Jr., James Hollis Parrott; and nieces, Sallie Mann, Glenn Fulwiler, Frances Oven and Isaac Linsey.
