Mr. James Norbert Rath, age 80, of Chester Village, passed away on  Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

 

Son of the late Jerome and Ann Radey Rath, he was born on December 27, 1928 in the small town of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, which is on the shores of Lake Michigan. He was raised in Appleton, WI

 

Jim attended the Salvation College at St. Nazianz Junior College. He completed his basic college training at the Catholic University earning an AB in Philosophy. Jim futher studied at Boston College, earning his master’s in both Education and Mathematics.

 

Later Jim became a high school and junior college mathematics teacher. He taught in Darien,CT for many years  and was a successful author of three series of Glencoe Algebra Mathematics books.  He was also a member of a group of mathematics text authors whose active writing and classroom experience produced over eight million copies. Jim spent a total of 36 years in writing and teaching.

 

Jim is survived by his three children, Kristina Rath and her husband Todd Constable of   Madison, Anne M. Rath of Easton, and James M. Rath of Austin, TX; Three grandchildren Helen, Alec and Jane Constable of Madison. He is also survived by three brothers John Rath of Appleton, WI, Robert Rath of Burlington, WI, William Rath of Sherwood, WI, two sisters  Jane Sackerson of Castle Rock, CO  and Judith Ottman of Parker, CO, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Mary Ann Kinzer
