James Madison Flaharty, Sr., 79 of Port Deposit, MD, went to be with the Lord, Friday, October 16, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Port Deposit, MD, on November 29, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry Madison and the late Mary Alice Huss Flaharty. Mr. Flaharty was the beloved husband of 54 years of Mavis Lyla Flaharty, Port Deposit, MD.
He was a Biochemist for Biochemical Research Foundation, Cancer Research Division; and Head Chemist for Terumo, Elkton, MD.
Mr. Flaharty was a life member of the NRA; a member of North American Hunt Club, Susquehanna Beekeepers Association, Lost Dutchman Gold Mining Association and Gold Prospectors of America, National Covered Bridge Association and Bible Fellowship Baptist Church. He was Pastor of the Deaf Evangelists Mission, Port Deposit, MD.
He was a beekeeper. He also made wine, bow and arrows, hand soap. He did cane chair repair and woodworking, making gavels from the Wye Oak to be sold to federal judges in Washington, DC. He was an avid hunter and also did scientific study of bats and turtles.
In addition to his loving wife, survivors include his children: Robin Coyle of VA, James Flaharty, Jr. of CA, Mary Lynn Miller of PA; daughter-in-law, Michele Flaharty of IL; son-in-law, Matthew Coyle of VA; 7 grandchildren: Marie Frankenburger, James Flaharty III, Brianna Flaharty, Josh Coyle, Jessica Miller, Daniel Miller and Rebecca Miller; great grandchild, Gabriel Alexander Frankenburger; 3 siblings: Frances Linton of MD, Dorothy Miller of MD and Esther Melchi of PA.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister: Marie Martell.
