Dr. James Millard Eaton, Jr. passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015.
Dr. Eaton was born February 5, 1935 in Hawkinsville, Georgia to James M. Eaton, Sr. and Maude Wimberly Eaton. He was preceded in death by his son James Millard Eaton, III and is survived by his beloved wife, Anita Anderson Eaton, his daughter Wimberly Eaton Jessup, son-in-law Mark Jeffrey Jessup, as well as five grandchildren, Sarah Carter Jessup, Caroline Eaton Jessup, Eva Marie Eaton, James Millard Eaton IV and Russell Davis Eaton.
Dr. Eaton graduated from Hawkinsville High School where he was known for his academic accomplishments, was proud to be Georgia state debate champion and an outstanding football player. Heavily recruited at the college level, Dr. Eaton ultimately selected and graduated from the University of Florida where he enjoyed a long and rewarding football career. Though recruited to play professional football, Dr. Eaton left the sport to attend Emory University School of Medicine where he practiced as a General Surgeon and ultimately served as Chief Resident / General Surgeon at Emory Hospital System from 1961-1966. Dr. Eaton also had the privilege of serving in the United States Air Force where he worked as the Chief of Surgery at the USAF hospital in London, England from 1966-1969. An avid historian and antique collector, Dr. and Mrs. Eaton enjoyed not only the living abroad with their young family but learning about the history of 18th century England and antiques.
Upon returning, Dr. Eaton pursued a second and more specific specialty as a resident of Urological Surgery at Duke University from 1969-1970. As a Urological surgeon, Dr. Eaton both discovered his passion and found a home at Duke where worked as a professor of Urological Surgery until 1972 when he went into private practice in Columbus, Georgia. In 1980, Dr. and Mrs. Eaton moved to Newnan, Georgia where he happily joined the PAPP Clinic and practiced Urology until he retired in 2000. Dr. Eaton was known for his commitment to his family, his patients and his community. He was lifelong teacher, a compassionate healer and an avid perennial gardener who delighted in sharing both his knowledge and the fruits of his labors.
