James Leroy Varnes, 84, of Grandin, passed from this life on Friday, November 19, 2021, at his home from natural causes. A native and lifelong resident of Putnam County, he served honorably in the U.S. Army for 2 years.
James entered the logging industry at a young age with his father and operated Varnes Logging for 52 years. He was a member of the Florida Loggers Association as well as the Florida Forestry Association. He was also a member of the First Church of God in Palatka. In his leisure time, James enjoyed fishing, hunting, NASCAR, and horse races.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian C. Varnes and Merriam Keene Varnes, and 2 brothers, Mark Varnes and J.C. Varnes, Jr.
James is survived by his wife of 22 years, Josette Varnes of Grandin, a son, Darrell Varnes of Francis, a brother, Mitchell Varnes (Eva Mae) of Satellite Beach, a sister, Marilyn Greene of Jacksonville, a sister-in-law, Catherine Varnes of Lake Como and 2 grandchildren, Amelia Varnes (Glenn Toal) and Weston Varnes.
