Mr. Moten passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at a Veteran’s Administration Hospice Facility.

“I’ve fought a good fight, I’ve finished my course.”

JAMES L. MOTEN, affectionately known as both “Temo” and “Leety” was born on July 14, 1937 in Travis County, Texas to Eli Moten, Sr. and Mary Moten. He was one of six siblings born to this union. In addition to his parents, three siblings preceded him in death: Clemmy Nevels, Dorothy Turner and Eli Moten, Jr. respectively.

James received his formal education in the public schools of Austin, where he attended L. L. Campbell Elementary School, Kealing Jr. High School, and L. C. Anderson Sr. High School. At Anderson, he was a super football star and also excelled in baseball. He graduated in 1956 with honors in both sports.

After graduation, “Temo” enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1959. He then moved to Dallas, Texas where he began employment with Delta Airlines as Supervisor of Operations. In the early seventies, he moved to Los Angeles, California.

When the OLCAAA (Original L. C. Anderson Alumni Association) was organized in 1996, Temo joined the chapter several years later and remained an active alumnus until his transition. He accepted the role of Parliamentarian and served three years until his health began to fail.

When our first Chapter Souvenir Journal was printed in 2009, he chose to include on the page of his biographical sketch his favorite quote, “Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love and the things you never want to lose”.

On Monday, September 9, 2013 in the early morning hours, God dispatched an angel to free him of his pain and suffering and brought him home to be with Him.

Left to cherish his memories and anticipate a glorious reunion are: one son, Lorris Meeks of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Cassandra Walker of Austin, Texas; one brother, Floyd Moten of Austin, Texas; one sister, Rena Davis of San Diego, California; five grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, his high school alumni family and many devoted and caring friends.
