J. Kent “Hippie” Cahill of Deshler, NE the son of Leo and Jeanne (McLees) Cahill was born April 25, 1950 in Genoa, NE. He departed this life Tuesday October 28, 2008 at his home in Deshler, NE after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Kent grew up on a farm at St. Edward, NE. He was baptized on May 7, 1950, and received First Holy Communion on June 2, 1957, by Fr. James Brady and was confirmed on September 17, 1959 at St. Edward Catholic Church by Archbishop Bergan. Kent attended Nance County District 45, Sunnyside from K-8th grade. He attended and graduated from St. Edward Public High School. He joined a combining crew with John Lund after graduation in the late 1960’s. Kent’s trucking career began with Westring & Sons in Genoa, hauling milk.

Kent met his wife Becky, while hauling milk to Superior, NE in 1984 and they married on April 19, 1985. To this union a son Cody was born in 1985. Kent hauled cattle from 1985 to 1986 and in that year their daughter Cameron was born. They moved to Deshler in the fall of 1986. He continued driving truck for Larkins & Sons until the kids started school and he wanted to be home with his family. Kent worked at Ray Mausoleum, Reinke Manufacturing from June 1994 until April 2008, retiring due to health reasons. Kent was diagnosed with lung cancer on June 14, 2006.

Kent was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Deshler, a member of the Deshler Recreation Board from 1998-2004, and a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler.

Kent enjoyed helping area farmers plant, harvest, move cows, and whatever else. He was a farmer at heart.
