James John Woomer, 87, previously of Arbutus, died of congestive heart failure at his son’s home in Lusby on November 26, 2011 after a 9 month illness.
He was born on April 18, 1924, in Baltimore, to the late Clara Virginia and Jerome William Woomer, Sr. He attended Poly Tech, and worked for the MS Levi Hat company in East Baltimore, before enlisting in the US Navy, serving from 1942 to 1946 as a Quartermaster 2nd Class. Nicknamed “Wheels” while in the service, he did sheet metal work and river pilot training. After the service, he attained his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management, and retired from BG&E after 35 years. He was a lifelong member of the Catonsville Moose, Regional Commander of the Delmarva Sub Vets, past Commander, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Maryland Sub Vets, president of an American Legion Post in Florida and member of the Arbutus American Legion. He also served as a guide for the USS Tork in Baltimore. He enjoyed crabbing and drinking beer, the Sub Vets, and cribbage.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years: Catherine Cecilia Woomer; two brothers: Stephen William Woomer and Jerome William Woomer, Jr.; grandson Brian Matthew Johnson; and two great grandchildren: Jamie and Cooper John Grantland.
He is survived by his son James Jerome Woomer; four daughters: Katherine Marie Remeikas, Mary Eileen Roach, Stephanie Carol Johnson, and Loretta Katherine Sponseller; god daughter Lynn Mary Jenkins; eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
